Durham sign South Africa's Codi Yusuf to bolster squad during injury crisis

Durham have secured the services of South African fast bowler Codi Yusuf as they look to navigate an early-season injury crisis in their bowling ranks during the Rothesay County Championship. The 27-year-old joins on a short-term deal that will see him feature in six Championship matches and the group stage of the Vitality Blast.

The club has also brought in Jake Ball, the former England pacer now with Somerset, and Lancashire seamer Jack Blatherwick on brief loan spells to bolster the depleted attack.

Durham are currently without a host of seamers—Brydon Carse, Sam Conners, Paul Coughlin, Daniel Hogg, Luke Robinson, Stanley McAlindon, and James Minto. The squad suffered an additional blow when key batter David Bedingham fractured his toe during their recent clash with Warwickshire. Fortunately, the injury is not as severe as initially feared, and Bedingham is expected to be fit for their fixture against Hampshire in early May, ahead of his international duty for South Africa in the World Test Championship final in June.

In Bedingham’s temporary absence, Yusuf will fill the overseas slot alongside Australian seamer Brendan Doggett.

Yusuf, a right-arm quick, has impressed in South African domestic cricket and was part of the South Africa A side that beat England Lions in December, where he claimed five wickets. Since his first-class debut in 2019, he has taken 88 wickets at an average of 29.14. His recent domestic form has been strong, with 26 wickets in seven matches during South Africa’s summer. In T20 cricket, he has 36 scalps at 29.66 and has featured for the Paarl Royals in the SA20 league.

Durham’s director of cricket Marcus North said:
"Codi joins us on the back of a strong domestic season in South Africa and will add depth to our bowling attack over the next few months. With several key bowlers sidelined, it was important we acted swiftly, and Codi's arrival helps address that. We're looking forward to welcoming him and seeing the impact he can make."

Yusuf expressed his excitement at the move:
"I want to thank Durham for the opportunity. It’s been a dream of mine to play county cricket, so to join a club like Durham is incredibly special. I know there are some great players here, and I’m excited to meet the team and be part of what looks like a fantastic environment."

Meanwhile, Jake Ball and Jack Blatherwick will be available for Durham's next two Championship matches. Neither has yet featured in first-team action this season.

"Exploring the loan market became essential given the current injury list and workload management for our bowlers," North added.

Nicholls Boosts Worcestershire

Durham’s upcoming opponents, Worcestershire, have made their own reinforcement, signing New Zealand international Henry Nicholls. The 33-year-old left-hander will be available until the end of June.

"Henry is a proven performer at international level," said Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson. "His experience and temperament will be invaluable as we look to build momentum early in the campaign."

Nicholls, eager to contribute, said:
"I'm excited to be joining Worcestershire. County cricket has always appealed to me, and I’m looking forward to helping the team succeed and being part of a club with a strong tradition."

Nicholls is expected to play against Durham this week, stepping in for Kashif Ali, who is on parental leave ahead of the birth of his first child.
