Dravid Warns All-Format Batters Lack Time to Sharpen Test Skills

India head coach Rahul Dravid has voiced concern that modern scheduling is leaving all-format batters with little opportunity to properly practise their Test-match skills. With international calendars packed and formats constantly overlapping, Dravid believes players are being forced to switch mindsets without adequate preparation time.

Dravid explained that Test batting demands patience, defensive technique, and long periods of concentration—qualities that cannot be maintained purely through match play in white-ball cricket. While limited-overs formats sharpen scoring options and reflexes, they do not replace the repetitive, detail-oriented work required to succeed over five days.

The issue, he suggested, is not a lack of intent or ability, but time. Players moving straight from T20s or ODIs into Tests often do so without extended net sessions or red-ball matches to recalibrate their methods. As a result, adaptation happens under match pressure rather than in preparation.

Dravid stressed the importance of finding windows for red-ball practice, whether through longer training camps or stronger domestic pathways. Without that, he warned, even elite batters risk being underprepared for Test cricket’s unique challenges.

His comments reflect a broader concern across the game: as formats multiply, preserving the skills required for Tests may depend less on talent—and more on time deliberately set aside to practise them.
