UAE head coach Lalchand Rajput believes the improving performances of Associate nations at the 2026 T20 World Cup should not come as a surprise, insisting the gap between Full Members and emerging teams is narrowing rapidly.
Though UAE will exit the tournament after their final group match against South Africa in Delhi, Rajput says his side leaves with pride intact. A win over Canada and a spirited showing against Afghanistan highlighted their growth after an opening defeat to New Zealand.
“I’m not surprised with how Associate teams have performed,” Rajput said. “It’s a big platform for them to show their talent, and they have done that. Smaller teams are coming up. Associate countries have put their hands up and said: ‘don’t take us lightly.’”
UAE’s campaign reflected that sentiment. After being outplayed in their opener, they regrouped to edge Canada and pushed Afghanistan in a competitive contest. Rajput credited increased exposure and match experience as key to their progress, stressing that Associates need more high-pressure games to develop the ability to handle tight situations.
One major positive has been the emergence of Sohaib Khan. With back-to-back fifties in only his fifth T20I, the middle-order batter has impressed with fearless strokeplay and mental strength. Rajput revealed Sohaib was identified in domestic cricket before flourishing on the global stage.
Bowler Junaid Siddique has also stood out, benefiting from experience in the ILT20, which Rajput says has boosted players’ confidence by exposing them to top-level competition.
Looking ahead, Rajput wants UAE to incorporate more two- and three-day cricket domestically to prepare players for longer formats, especially with qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup firmly in their sights.
