Disciplinary Blow for UAE as Zohaib Is Sent Home Before World Cup Opener

On the eve of their opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, United Arab Emirates have been dealt a setback after batter Muhammad Zohaib was sent back home for disciplinary reasons. The Emirates Cricket Board confirmed the decision in a brief statement on Monday, adding that further details would be shared in due course.

The timing of Zohaib’s departure could hardly be worse for UAE, who begin their World Cup campaign against New Zealand on Tuesday in Chennai. Already facing a challenging group and a formidable opponent, UAE now head into the contest with a depleted batting line-up and growing pressure on their top order.

Zohaib’s recent form had been mixed. He batted at No. 9 in UAE’s last warm-up match, where they were bowled out for just 81 against Italy, but showed greater responsibility earlier in the week with a 19-ball 26 at No. 3 against Nepal. Since making his T20I debut in May 2025, Zohaib has played 16 matches, scoring 303 runs at an average of 20.20, often filling flexible roles in the batting order.

UAE have already backed 21-year-old Aryansh Sharma to open alongside captain Muhammad Waseem, a partnership that will now carry even greater responsibility. Waseem, speaking ahead of the New Zealand clash, emphasised preparation, belief, and team unity, pointing to UAE’s surprise T20I victory over New Zealand in Dubai in 2023 as a source of confidence.

More than tactics, Waseem stressed the collective identity of the squad, dismissing any notion of divisions based on background. “There is no India-Pakistan,” he said. “We are playing for the UAE. We live like a family.”
