Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been dealt an early setback ahead of IPL 2026, with veteran captain MS Dhoni likely to miss the first two weeks of the tournament due to a calf strain.
The franchise confirmed that Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation, raising doubts over his availability for CSK’s opening fixtures. He is expected to sit out matches against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals as he recovers.
In Dhoni’s absence, new signing Sanju Samson is the leading candidate to take over wicketkeeping duties. Samson, who was traded from Rajasthan Royals ahead of the season, is also set to open the batting alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Other backup wicketkeeping options include Urvil Patel and young prospect Kartik Sharma.
Dhoni featured in all 14 matches for CSK last season, primarily batting in the lower order and contributing 196 runs at a strike rate of 135.17. Despite his presence, CSK endured a disappointing campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table with just four wins.
The team will be hoping for a turnaround this season, but Dhoni’s absence adds to their early challenges. They have already lost Australian pacer Nathan Ellis to injury, with Spencer Johnson brought in as his replacement, though he too is expected to join the squad later due to recovery from a back issue.
CSK’s bowling attack will be led by Matt Henry, supported by Khaleel Ahmed, Jamie Overton, and others, while allrounders like Shivam Dube provide balance.
With key players sidelined at the start, CSK will need their revamped lineup to step up quickly as they aim to bounce back strongly in IPL 2026.
