Delhi Capitals Appoint Chaminda Vaas as Fast Bowling Coach Ahead of IPL 2027

Delhi Capitals Appoint Chaminda Vaas as Fast Bowling Coach Ahead of IPL 2027

Delhi Capitals have appointed former Sri Lankan all-rounder Chaminda Vaas as their fast bowling coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season, strengthening the franchise's coaching staff under head coach Sourav Ganguly. The appointment marks Vaas's first coaching role in the IPL, bringing his extensive international experience to the team's bowling department. The 52-year-old replaces Munaf Patel, who served as Delhi Capitals' bowling coach over the previous two seasons. Vaas is widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka's most successful fast bowlers, having claimed 355 wickets in Test cricket and 400 wickets in One-Day Internationals during his international career.
Vaas joins a revamped Delhi Capitals backroom staff as the franchise prepares for the upcoming IPL season. Earlier in the week, the team appointed former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as assistant and batting coach, adding further international experience to the coaching setup. With Ganguly leading the coaching group, the appointments indicate a renewed focus on strengthening the team's technical preparation and performance ahead of IPL 2027. Vaas is expected to contribute his expertise in fast bowling, helping the team's pace attack develop consistency, improve execution and adapt to different match conditions.
The former Sri Lankan international brings considerable coaching experience from the international circuit. He has worked with Sri Lanka's men's team in several coaching stints, including a period from 2013 to 2015, and also served as Ireland's bowling coach during the 2016 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Before his extended involvement with Sri Lankan cricket, Vaas had a brief coaching assignment with New Zealand. His experience across different teams and formats is expected to be valuable as Delhi Capitals work to build a balanced bowling unit.
Vaas also has previous IPL experience as a player, having represented Deccan Chargers during the first three seasons of the tournament, from 2008 to 2010. He played 13 matches for the franchise and took 18 wickets, demonstrating his ability to contribute in the shortest format. His return to the IPL in a coaching capacity marks a new chapter in his association with the competition. Delhi Capitals will hope his appointment, alongside the additions of Ganguly and Yuvraj, helps the team improve its performances and mount a stronger challenge for the IPL title in 2027.
