But Mitchell Starc turned the script on its head, delivering five near-perfect yorkers in a sensational final over that allowed only eight runs. Dhruv Jurel failed to complete a second run off the last delivery, dragging the game into a dramatic Super Over.
In the tie-breaker, RR crumbled under pressure. Both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag were run out in a chaotic Super Over that lasted only five balls, setting DC a modest 12-run target. Tristan Stubbs finished the job in style, sealing victory with a six off Sandeep Sharma in just four deliveries.
Stubbs the Game-Changer
Stubbs was the architect of DC's resurgence. Walking in at a time when the hosts were struggling to reach par, he smashed an unbeaten 34 off 18 balls — including 42 runs in the last three overs — to push DC to 188. He was well-supported by Axar Patel, whose explosive 34 off 14, including a takedown of Wanindu Hasaranga, set the stage.
RR’s bowlers crumbled at the death. Sandeep Sharma, who had been excellent with 3-0-14-0, lost control in his final over, leaking 19 runs due to four wides, a no-ball, and a dropped sitter by Maheesh Theekshana.
Stubbs was also gifted a life on 12 when Parag dropped a regulation chance at long-on — a miss that proved costly. His impact wasn’t limited to the bat; he fired a brilliant throw from the deep to keep Jurel to a single with RR needing 3 off 2 in regulation.
Stubbs’ day could’ve had a different story had Nitish Rana’s mishit gone to hand. Instead, Stubbs palmed the ball over the boundary, giving Rana a life on 20. Rana made DC pay with a 12-ball 31, taking RR into the final stretch with momentum.
That charge was halted by a searing Starc yorker, which shattered Rana's stumps with RR needing 28 from 14. The Royals managed just eight runs in the last over, as Starc bowled one of the most clutch overs in IPL history.
Starc’s night had started poorly. Jaiswal took him apart in his first over with a brutal sequence of 4, 6, 4, exposing the short leg-side boundary. But the Aussie pacer bounced back brilliantly when it mattered most, showcasing his world-class death bowling skills.
Sanju Samson gave RR early momentum before a suspected side strain forced him to retire hurt at 61 without loss in the sixth over. His departure slowed the innings just as it was picking up steam. Jaiswal, meanwhile, continued to attack, scoring a vital 51 and setting the tone for the chase.
DC were on the back foot early, losing Fraser-McGurk and Karun Nair cheaply. But Abishek Porel lit up the powerplay with a 23-run over off Tushar Deshpande. KL Rahul played the anchor, grinding his way to 38 off 32 before falling to Archer.
After Porel fell for 49, Axar and Stubbs reignited the innings, pushing DC to a competitive total that they ultimately defended with nerves of steel.
