Middlesex have appointed former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Dane Vilas as their interim first-team coach for the remainder of the 2025 season, just two days after parting ways with Richard Johnson, who had held the role for three and a half years. Vilas, 40, brings a wealth of playing experience, having represented South Africa in six Tests and one T20I and enjoyed a successful county stint with Lancashire, where he captained the side and led them to T20 Finals Day three times and two consecutive second-place finishes in the County Championship. Since retiring from first-class cricket in 2023, Vilas has remained active in franchise leagues like the SA20 and has been based in London, making him a timely and accessible option for Middlesex. Currently languishing near the bottom of Division Two with only two wins in seven matches, and struggling similarly in the Vitality Blast, Middlesex hope Vilas’ competitive spirit, leadership acumen, and familiarity with English domestic cricket can inspire a turnaround. Director of cricket Alan Coleman praised Vilas’ leadership credentials and passion, noting his strong rapport with assistant coaches Rory Coutts, Tim Murtagh, and Ian Salisbury, who will support him in the role.
