Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed Australian left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson as a replacement for injured compatriot Nathan Ellis ahead of IPL 2026. However, Johnson is unlikely to be available immediately, with the franchise confirming he will join the squad only around April 21–23 as he continues his recovery from a back injury.
Johnson has not played competitive cricket since IPL 2025, when he suffered a stress fracture that ruled him out for several months, including the Big Bash League season. Encouragingly for CSK, recent medical updates suggest his injury has healed, and he has resumed bowling, albeit at reduced intensity as he builds fitness.
His delayed arrival means he is expected to miss at least CSK’s first four matches of the season, including fixtures against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals. Despite the setback, CSK view him as a valuable addition to their pace attack for the latter stages of the tournament.
Johnson, 30, joins the franchise for INR 1.5 crore and brings international experience, having represented Australia in five ODIs and eight T20Is. Across his T20 career, he has played 71 matches and is known for his left-arm angle and ability to generate bounce.
Ellis, meanwhile, was ruled out after aggravating a hamstring injury during Australia’s domestic One-Day Cup final earlier this month. His absence forced CSK to seek a replacement, leading them to Johnson despite his ongoing rehabilitation.
CSK’s overseas pace options now include Matt Henry, Jamie Overton, and Zak Foulkes, while Indian seamers such as Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Choudhary add depth.
If Johnson can regain full fitness, he could play a crucial role in strengthening CSK’s bowling unit as the tournament progresses.
