Cricket Australia suspends Megan Schutt for two matches over a prescription medication breach

Cricket Australia has suspended Megan Schutt for two matches after the fast bowler breached the board's guidelines on prescription medication, a penalty she accepted without contest
Megan Schutt will sit out two matches across international and domestic cricket after Cricket Australia found she had failed to meet its requirements on the use of prescription medication. The board confirmed the suspension in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
Cricket Australia said the breach was "a failure to adhere to requirements under the Sports Science and Sports Medicine guidelines with regard to prescription medication".
It described the matter as "a single incidence which occurred while out of competition and was not for performance enhancing purposes", and said the ban covers all international and domestic cricket.
What Cricket Australia found
The guidelines sit inside Cricket Australia's sports science and sports medicine framework, which governs how players obtain, declare and use prescribed drugs. They are separate from the anti-doping code.
The board did not name the medication involved, nor say when the incident took place beyond placing it outside competition.
Rather than deal with the matter quietly, Cricket Australia set out both the nature of the breach and its limits in the same statement.
It said it would continue to provide "appropriate support" to Schutt while reinforcing the standards expected of everyone involved in the game.
Schutt accepts the penalty
Schutt made no attempt to contest the finding. "I fully accept the penalty handed down and apologise for failing to meet the standards expected of me," she said.
She also addressed the scrutiny the case had drawn. "I'm sorry for the attention this has caused and appreciate the support I've received," she said.
While noting that the incident fell outside competition and had nothing to do with performance, Schutt said the responsibility for following the guidelines rested with her.
Players receive regular education on those requirements, she said, and she should have adhered to them.
Not an anti-doping case
The distinction matters. Cricket Australia's statement that the medication was not taken for performance-enhancing purposes places the case outside the anti-doping system that deals with banned substances.
What Schutt fell foul of is an internal compliance rule covering how prescribed medication is handled and declared.
The sanction of two matches reflects that narrower finding, and the board volunteered the out-of-competition detail rather than leaving the breach open to inference.
The ban reaches into the WBBL season
Because the suspension applies to domestic cricket as well, its effect runs past Australia's international schedule. The three-match T20I series against New Zealand ended at North Sydney Oval on Thursday night, the same day the penalty was announced.
WBBL|12 begins on 29 October with a double-header at Junction Oval in Melbourne, where the Melbourne Renegades meet the Sydney Thunder before the Stars play the Hobart Hurricanes under lights.
The Adelaide Strikers open their campaign two days later, against the Melbourne Stars at Karen Rolton Oval on 31 October.
Schutt will miss that Halloween fixture under the ban, leaving the Strikers to start the season without one of their senior bowlers.
One of the format's leading wicket-takers
Schutt remains the leading wicket-taker in women's T20I cricket, a record she took from Pakistan's Nida Dar in 2024 and has held since.
Her form has not fallen away either. She took ten wickets across Australia's recent three-match ODI series against Bangladesh.
The suspension therefore lands at the start of the domestic summer rather than during the international season just completed.
Cricket Australia's statement closed the matter there, with Schutt available for selection again once the two-match ban has been served.
