Bumrah returns and Pant awaits fitness clearance in India's New Zealand Test squad

Jasprit Bumrah is back in India's Test squad for next month's two-match tour of New Zealand, with Rishabh Pant named subject to a fitness clearance
The BCCI's Men's Selection Committee named a 16-man Test squad on 16 October for the back end of a long tour. Shubman Gill captains the side and KL Rahul is vice-captain, with the first Test starting in Wellington on 19 November and the second in Christchurch on 27 November.
Bumrah's name is the significant one. He was picked for India's most recent World Test Championship series, in Sri Lanka, but was withdrawn before it began and replaced by Auqib Nabi, leaving India to win the opening Test and draw the second without their leading fast bowler.
Pant is the only player in the Test squad carrying the board's asterisk for fitness, with Dhruv Jurel named as the second wicketkeeper.
Bumrah returns to the Test side
Bumrah has taken his wickets at 19.79 in 52 Tests, a return that has made him the first name on India's team sheet whenever he is available. Across the current championship cycle he has 29 wickets, third among India's bowlers behind Mohammed Siraj on 43 and Ravindra Jadeja on 33.
He appears in the Test squad only. The two ODI squads announced for the same tour leave him out, so his workload on this trip is built around the five days that count towards the championship.
Wellington and Christchurch are expected to offer the pace and bounce that New Zealand's seamers have long traded on, conditions in which a bowler of Bumrah's control is worth more than a wicket column alone suggests.
Pant's fitness is the one open question
Pant sustained a left-side strain while captaining Rest of India in the Irani Cup and was ruled out of the first two unofficial Tests on India A's tour of New Zealand, with Kumar Kushagra named as his replacement and Jurel leading that side.
The BCCI said at the time of that withdrawal: "A decision on his availability for the third match will be taken at a later stage." No clearance has been announced since.
That third match matters more than its billing suggests. India A play three unofficial Tests between 24 October and 10 November, in Lincoln and Christchurch, which gives Pant a route back to red-ball cricket before the Wellington Test rather than arriving cold.
Kuldeep Yadav back in the reckoning
Kuldeep Yadav returns after being left out of India's XI for the second Test in Sri Lanka. He took one wicket in the series opener before that call was made.
His longer record reads better than that sequence: 80 wickets from 19 Tests, a haul built largely on the turn and bounce he extracts rather than on volume of overs.
He will compete for a place with the spin-bowling all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, both of whom bat high enough to shape how many specialist spinners India can carry in New Zealand.
Six seam options for New Zealand conditions
Alongside Bumrah the squad carries Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and Anshul Kamboj, with Nitish Kumar Reddy available as a seam-bowling all-rounder.
Prasidh is listed subject to fitness in the squad for the first three ODIs but appears without qualification in the Test squad, an ordering that points to the selectors expecting him available by late November.
A tour that ends with the championship at stake
India sit fifth in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings on 51.52 per cent of points available, having won the first Test in Sri Lanka and drawn the second.
They have reached the final in both previous cycles, and the next one is at The Oval in June 2027, which makes two away Tests in November a useful place to gain ground.
The Tests close a long tour. India play five T20Is first, then five ODIs between 4 and 15 November, with Gill captaining the first three and Shreyas Iyer the last two, and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli named in the ODI squads only.
India Test squad: Shubman Gill (capt), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul (vc), Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant (wk, subject to fitness), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj, Sai Sudharsan.
