Brook rests, Root returns as England stars dip into County Championship

Harry Brook will sit out the early part of the County Championship season, opting for a break in April after an intense winter schedule with England. The Yorkshire batter featured in all 25 of England’s matches across formats and had minimal rest between October and March.

Brook is set to return for Yorkshire in May, with two scheduled appearances against Warwickshire and Surrey before linking up with England for the home Test series against New Zealand in June.

Meanwhile, Joe Root will make three County Championship appearances for Yorkshire as he gears up for the international summer. Root, who has not played competitively since January, is expected to feature against Sussex, Somerset and Surrey after a short break.

The start of the County Championship has already seen several England players return to domestic action. Ollie Pope, Zak Crawley, Jamie Smith and others were in action on the opening day, while Shoaib Bashir made his debut for Derbyshire.

However, injuries and workload management have kept key players sidelined. Ben Stokes is recovering from a cheekbone injury, while Mark Wood remains unavailable. Others, including Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks, are currently involved in the IPL.

With England coming off a heavy Ashes defeat, the early rounds of the County Championship carry added significance. The Test squad for the New Zealand series is far from settled, and strong domestic performances could influence selection decisions.

Stokes has urged players to seize the opportunity, highlighting the depth of talent in English cricket and encouraging contenders to push their case.

As the domestic season unfolds, the spotlight will be firmly on county performers aiming to force their way into England’s rebuilding Test side.
