Brook and Lawrence stretch England's lead past 80 on day two at Edgbaston

England moved to 213 for 4 on the second morning at Edgbaston, an unbroken stand between Harry Brook and Dan Lawrence carrying the hosts 80 runs clear of Pakistan's first innings of 133

England resumed the second day of the third Test on 156 for 4, 23 runs in front, and came through the first hour without losing a wicket. By the 47th over they had reached 213 for 4 and the lead was out to 80.

Brook, unbeaten on 52 overnight, moved into the sixties at his own pace. Lawrence, who had faced only a handful of deliveries on Wednesday evening, took the initiative and scored quickly on both sides of the wicket.

The platform was laid on the opening day, when Pakistan were bowled out for 133 in 33.5 overs after England captain Joe Root won the toss and chose to bowl under heavy cloud. England already hold the three-match series 2-0.

A wicketless first hour

Brook began the day on 52 from 76 balls and Lawrence on 5, and Pakistan's seamers found neither the movement nor the pressure that had served them so well the previous afternoon.

Lawrence was the quicker of the two, reaching the forties from 46 balls with eight fours, while Brook turned the strike over and picked off the occasional drive.

Mohammad Abbas carried the bowling, sending down more than 17 overs for a single wicket, and Mohammad Ali overstepped while attempting to have Lawrence caught. The pair had added 70 for the fifth wicket by the time the lead reached 80.

Pakistan undone inside nine overs

Pakistan's innings was effectively decided in the first hour of the match, the tourists slipping to 26 for 4 as the ball moved off the seam.

Saim Ayub was trapped in front by Ollie Robinson without scoring and Abdullah Shafique edged to gully in the same spell. Shan Masood holed out attempting to pull Jofra Archer, and Babar Azam was bowled by Josh Tongue for 7 from 18 balls.

Saud Shakeel was the only batter to settle, top-scoring with 43 from 47 balls with seven fours, and Mohammad Abbas made 21 down the order.

"Pakistan collapsing in front of our eyes here on a flat pitch at Edgbaston," said the former England captain Nasser Hussain on commentary as the fourth wicket fell. "Terrible viewing if you are a Pakistan fan."

Three seamers share the spoils

Tongue was the most successful of England's bowlers with 4 for 42, and Archer took 3 for 25 in a hostile opening burst.

Robinson's figures of 3 for 15 came at an economy rate of 1.36, a return that gave Pakistan no way of rebuilding between wickets and brought up his 100th wicket in Test cricket.

Gay and Brook repair the reply

England's own start was awkward. Ben Duckett and Jordan Cox went cheaply, and Root was lbw to the debutant Razaullah in the seamer's first over in Test cricket to leave the innings 39 for 3.

Emilio Gay and Brook then added 104 for the fourth wicket, Gay batting through the evening for 60 from 114 balls with nine fours before Razaullah had him as well.

Razaullah, one of three Pakistan debutants at Edgbaston, finished the opening day with 2 for 42 and bowled at pace throughout.

A tour remade mid-series

Pakistan arrived in Birmingham with a squad rebuilt in the middle of the tour, the board having released seven players after the 194-run defeat at Lord's, among them Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq and Salman Ali Agha.

Head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were removed at the same time, with the white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and the former Australia seamer Ashley Noffke taking over the Test side for the rest of the series.

The reshuffled batting order has yet to answer the questions the first two Tests raised, and a fifth score below 200 in the series has left Pakistan defending a deficit before the halfway point of the match.
