Botham Slams 'Appalling' Taunton Pitch After Durham's Two-Day Collapse

Lord Ian Botham has launched a scathing attack on the Taunton pitch following Durham's crushing two-day defeat to Somerset in the County Championship, branding the surface “appalling” and “unfit for proper cricket.”

Durham, who were skittled out twice in under five sessions, fell to an innings-and-32-run loss on a surface that offered sharp turn, variable bounce, and minimal scoring opportunities from the outset. The match concluded midway through Day 2, raising eyebrows and prompting concern over the integrity of the playing conditions.

Botham, Durham’s chairman and one of the most respected voices in English cricket, did not mince his words in the aftermath.

"It’s simply not acceptable," he said. "This pitch was appalling. You expect a challenge, yes—but what we saw was bordering on unplayable. The ball was exploding off the surface from Day 1, and frankly, it's not a fair contest when you’ve got elite players struggling to stand a chance."

Durham managed just 122 and 108 in their two innings, with Somerset’s spinners Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir running riot, sharing 15 wickets between them. Though Somerset also struggled at times, their first-innings 262 proved more than sufficient on a surface that deteriorated rapidly.

The ECB is expected to investigate the pitch conditions at the Cooper Associates County Ground, with match referees already submitting preliminary reports. Historically, Somerset have faced scrutiny over their spin-friendly tracks, including past points deductions for “poor” surfaces.

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr, while defending his team’s performance, admitted the pitch was “challenging,” but stopped short of criticising the ground staff.

"We asked for a pitch that would give us something to work with, especially for our spinners. Maybe it did a bit more than we expected."

The result dents Durham’s push for top honours and reignites debate over pitch preparation in county cricket. As for Botham, his message was clear: spinning conditions are part of the game—but there’s a line, and at Taunton, it was crossed.
