Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named in India's 16-man T20I squad for the five-match tour of New Zealand, almost four years after his last appearance in the format
The BCCI announced the squad on Tuesday, with Shreyas Iyer continuing as captain and Tilak Varma as his deputy. The 36-year-old seamer last played a T20I against New Zealand at Napier on 22 November 2022, in the weeks after that year's T20 World Cup.
It is the first senior squad chosen since Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chairman of the men's selection committee ended, with former spinner Pragyan Ojha taking the meeting in Guwahati as interim head.
The group is otherwise close to the one in the field against West Indies, a series India lead after winning the Lucknow opener by eight wickets.
Bhuvneshwar earned the call-up on the back of 28 wickets from 16 matches at an economy rate of 7.95 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru during their title defence in IPL 2026, the best return of his IPL career.
He followed it with 14 wickets from 11 matches in the UP T20 League across August and September, keeping himself in front of the selectors through the domestic off-season.
He returns with 90 wickets from 87 T20Is at an average of 23.10 and a best of 5-4, a record that still stands among the strongest by an India seamer in the format.
New Zealand's conditions suit the skill he has been picked for. Swing with the new ball and control at the death were the two things India found hardest to source in the format last season.
The gap spans an entire T20 World Cup cycle for India, and he comes back into a pace attack he now leads on experience, with Arshdeep Singh alongside him and the far newer Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav behind them.
Dinesh Karthik welcomed the decision on India Today, saying: "It's taken four years to pick him back in that Indian team. Firstly, well done, selectors, to have the courage to pick someone."
"Team India in the last year, they have tried all pacers. But if you actually look purely on skill, Bhuvi has been exceptional," Karthik said. "The quality that he brings is brilliant. He can bowl with a new ball, swing it both ways, and then at the death, he can handle pressure."
"I just genuinely wish he goes out there and enjoys the rest of the time that he plays international cricket. He deserves it purely on performance," he added.
Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi is the player to make way, with Varun Chakravarthy back in to partner Kuldeep Yadav as the frontline spin pair.
Washington Sundar, withdrawn earlier from the West Indies squad, is absent again. Naman Dhir, who replaced him there and took 3-31 on debut in Lucknow, keeps his place among the all-rounders alongside Axar Patel, Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Jasprit Bumrah has been left out of the T20Is so his workload can be managed before the Test cricket that follows on the same tour.
The T20Is begin at Christchurch on 22 October, with the second at the same ground two days later, before Wellington on 27 October, Auckland on 30 October and Hamilton on 1 November.
An India A squad captained by Dhruv Jurel travels alongside for three four-day matches, at Lincoln from 24 October, Christchurch from 31 October and Lincoln again from 7 November. The ODI and Test squads are to be named later. The squad was settled while the West Indies series is still being played, leaving the touring party set well before the last T20I in that series.
