Yastika Bhatia marked her long-awaited international return with a memorable half-century as India women's cricket team defeated England women's cricket team in the opening T20I at Chelmsford, offering another encouraging sign ahead of the upcoming ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
Playing her first international match since October 2024 after recovering from ACL surgery and multiple injury setbacks, Bhatia produced a composed 54 off 40 balls under pressure. India had collapsed to 7 for 2 inside the opening over after Lauren Bell dismissed both Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma early.
Bhatia then combined brilliantly with Jemimah Rodrigues for a match-defining 126-run partnership. Rodrigues played with her usual fluency, hammering 69 from 40 deliveries, while Bhatia anchored the recovery with maturity and calmness.
After the match, Bhatia described the comeback innings as “really special,” reflecting on the difficult rehabilitation process following knee surgery that forced her to rebuild strength and confidence from scratch. She credited teammates and support staff for helping her through months of uncertainty during recovery.
India eventually posted a competitive total despite losing momentum late in the innings after both Rodrigues and Bhatia departed in quick succession. The performance once again highlighted India’s batting depth even in the absence of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who was rested for the series opener.
Another major positive for India came through debutant Nandani Sharma. The young fast bowler impressed immediately with figures of 3 for 34, showcasing smart variations and composure under pressure. Her wickets included Amy Jones, who top-scored for England with 67, as well as Dani Gibson and Issy Wong.
Nandani’s rise continues a remarkable breakthrough year after her impressive performances in the Women’s Premier League, where she emerged as one of the competition’s leading wicket-takers.
England, meanwhile, continue to search for their ideal combinations ahead of the World Cup, especially with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt still recovering from injury. Acting captain Charlie Dean admitted the team is still experimenting with batting roles as they prepare for the global tournament.
With Harmanpreet expected to return for the second T20I in Bristol, India now have the opportunity to seal the series while further strengthening their World Cup preparations.
