Bethell Set to Open as England Announce ODI Squad for India Series

Jacob Bethell is set for a major promotion after being lined up to open the batting for England national cricket team in the upcoming ODI series against India national cricket team.

The move signals growing confidence in the 22-year-old and could even hint at a future promotion in England’s Test setup.

Bethell’s Promotion Reflects Search for Stability

England have struggled to settle on a consistent opening partner for Ben Duckett in ODI cricket.

Since early last year, Duckett has had four different partners:

  • Phil Salt
  • Jamie Smith
  • Zak Crawley
  • Rehan Ahmed (as pinch-hitter)

Bethell now appears to be the latest experiment, moving up from his recent No. 4 role.

He has prior experience opening for:

  • England U-19
  • England Lions

Strong Core in Middle Order

England’s ODI batting core remains packed with experience and firepower.

Expected middle order:

  • Joe Root — No. 3
  • Harry Brook — captain
  • Jos Buttler — wicketkeeper
  • Will Jacks — middle-order hitter

England also have flexibility between selecting:

  • Extra batter: Tom Banton
    or
  • Extra bowling option

Archer Returns; New Faces Included

The bowling unit gets a major boost with the return of Jofra Archer to ODI cricket.

Also included:

  • Gus Atkinson
  • Saqib Mahmood
  • Josh Tongue (uncapped in ODIs)
  • James Coles (uncapped)

Archer’s return is especially significant as England look to rebuild their 50-over attack for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Injury and Squad Changes

Unavailable due to injury:

  • Brydon Carse — hand injury
  • Jamie Overton — quad injury

Dropped:

  • Zak Crawley
  • Luke Wood

India Bring Full Strength Squad

India are expected to field a near full-strength squad featuring:

  • Rohit Sharma
  • Virat Kohli (fitness permitting)
  • Jasprit Bumrah

ODI Series Schedule

Matches will be played at:

  • July 14 — Edgbaston
  • July 16 — Sophia Gardens
  • July 19 — Lord's Cricket Ground

England’s decision to back Bethell at the top may prove one of the biggest talking points of the series—and perhaps of their long-term batting future.
