The joint meeting with franchise owners, broadcasters and host state associations, called for Mumbai on Thursday, has been deferred with no new date fixed
The BCCI has postponed the joint meeting it had convened with Indian Premier League franchise owners, their chief executives, broadcasters and the state associations that host matches, which was to be held in Mumbai at 6 PM on Thursday, 15 October.
Stakeholders were informed on Tuesday evening and no revised date has been announced. "The revised date and venue will be communicated in due course," board secretary Devajit Saikia wrote in the email sent to invitees.
It was to be the board's first full stock-take with every arm of the competition ahead of the league's 20th season in 2027, and it falls weeks before a retention deadline and a mini-auction that will reshape the ten squads.
Saikia's letter framed the gathering as a review. "As the league approaches its landmark 20th season in 2027, the BCCI proposes to convene a joint meeting," he wrote, describing it as intended to "review the issues and learnings from the past seasons, address any concerns" and to "deliberate on the planning and coordination for the 2027 season."
It followed the general body's decision at last month's annual general meeting in Mumbai to stage the 20th edition on a grand scale.
"We have invited all the stakeholders of the IPL, including franchise owners, broadcasters and hosting state associations," Saikia said.
The 13 associations that ordinarily host IPL matches have not routinely been part of the league's planning discussions, which have tended to involve franchise representatives.
Saikia's letter said their input on hosting, venue operations and match-day coordination would be valuable. Broadcaster JioStar was also expected to attend.
Two reasons were given for the deferral. Board officials are required in New Delhi on the same day, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to felicitate India's men's and women's teams following the Asian Games in Japan, and several stakeholders had asked for more time.
India won both cricket golds at those Games. The women beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs in their final on 22 September, and the men made 211 for 6 and beat Pakistan by 19 runs on 3 October.
Saikia said the postponement was meant to allow maximum participation in person.
The venue had not been settled in any case. "We haven't yet finalised the venue. We have just shortlisted a few options. We will take a final call soon," he said.
Franchises are expected to submit their lists of retained and released players by 15 November, according to Cricbuzz, before a mini-auction in Goa in December.
"We are going to host it in Goa in the month of December," Saikia said when the venue was confirmed on 23 September, bringing the auction back to India after Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi staged recent editions.
The trading window is open and closes a week before the auction.
Hanging over the off-season is the future of the Impact Player rule, which has drawn criticism from India captains and franchise coaches.
The IPL Governing Council did not settle the matter at its September meeting and a decision is expected in the coming weeks, before the retention deadline. The rule was not listed among the items for Thursday's meeting.
Franchises are reported to be divided on it: most dislike the rule, but many regard removing it now as premature, having built their squads around it.
Until the board names a new date, the 15 November retention deadline stands as the next fixed point in the IPL's off-season.
