BCCI backs Rohit Sharma’s position in ODI team

BCCI backs Rohit Sharma’s position in ODI team

Rohit Sharma’s place in India’s ODI setup appears secure for now, with the BCCI indicating that there is no immediate threat to his position as speculation continues over his availability for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia backed Rohit following Thursday’s performance review of the Indian team, pointing to the veteran batter’s strong form.

The review meeting was attended by India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was absent from the meeting as he was reportedly away from Mumbai.

Saikia also dismissed speculation that Laxman could be handed a new role, such as director of cricket. He further indicated that there are no immediate plans to change the Agarkar-led selection committee.

With Rohit continuing to perform strongly, the former India captain remains firmly in contention for a place in the 2027 World Cup squad, although his long-term ODI future is likely to remain a talking point as the tournament approaches.
