BCB Anti-Corruption Unit Probing Controversial Stumping in Dhaka Premier League

The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is investigating a contentious stumping incident that occurred during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match between Gulshan Cricket Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

The moment in question unfolded in the final stages of the match when Shinepukur batter Minhajul Abedin was dismissed under unusual circumstances, despite seemingly having enough time to return to the crease. Minhajul had stepped out to offspinner Naeem Islam but chose not to play at the delivery, which went wide outside off stump. Wicketkeeper Alif Hasan initially failed to remove the bails, but Minhajul made little effort to regain his ground. Instead, he hovered his bat inside the crease without grounding it, and then inexplicably pulled it back, leaving him outside the crease. Alif broke the stumps on his second attempt, leading to Minhajul's dismissal.

The decision was immediately referred to the third umpire, and television replays appeared to show the batter’s actions were not in line with a typical effort to avoid dismissal. The unusual nature and timing of the stumping — with Shinepukur needing just six runs from seven overs to win — sparked widespread outrage. The dismissal ended their innings at 173, handing Gulshan Cricket Club a five-run victory. Shinepukur, who have just two points from nine matches, are now in a precarious position in the standings.

On-air commentator Mazhar Uddin Omi described the moment as “shocking,” adding: “I have never seen anything like this before.”

The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), which oversees the competition, confirmed that it has alerted the ACU about the incident and is awaiting official reports from the match officials.

“We saw the footage — it was the final dismissal of the day,” said Sabbir Ahmed, league coordinator for the CCDM. “The match referee is responsible for such issues, and the TV umpire was also present, so they will be providing a report. We've already reached out to the BCB's Anti-Corruption Unit to see whether they are taking action. We've been informed that the ACU is looking into it.”

The Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League is Bangladesh’s top-tier List-A domestic competition. The final round of the regular season is scheduled for next week, after which the top six teams will contest the Super League, while the bottom three will fight to avoid relegation — with two teams set to drop out of the competition.
