'Batting Always One Step Behind' — Shai Hope Reflects on West Indies' T20I Series Loss

West Indies T20I captain Shai Hope has acknowledged his team's struggles with the bat during their recent 5-0 series defeat to Australia, attributing their performance to a consistent inability to set competitive totals. Despite the series loss, Hope expressed satisfaction with the bowling unit's improvement, highlighting individual performances that offered hope for future matches.

Reflecting on the batting shortcomings, Hope stated, "As a batting group, we didn't really give ourselves the best chance to put a big score on the board consistently. And that's probably where we fell short… We've always been one step behind the eight ball." He also noted the challenge of not winning a single toss in the series, which meant his team was forced to bowl first in all five matches. "Whether it's the dew factor, wind factor, you always have that scoreboard in front of you, so you have an idea of how to go about the chase," Hope added.

On a positive note, Hope commended the bowling attack for their efforts as the series progressed. Young left-arm seamer Jediah Blades impressed with a three-wicket haul in the fourth match, while veteran pacer Alzarri Joseph delivered a strong performance in the final game before being forced off the field. Spinner Akeal Hosein also contributed effectively in the series' concluding match. Hope emphasized the importance of these individual performances, stating, "We understood the struggles of bowling spin here on this ground and surface... [Hosein] is a quality bowler and we just backed him to come and do the job, and he did exceptionally well for that four-over spell."

Looking ahead, Hope remains optimistic about his team's prospects. "I think that we're a little bit clearer in the bowling unit," he remarked. "We certainly executed a lot better than we did in the first few games. We've got to put this one behind us, and look ahead for the Pakistan series, and see where we can get that combination and that success going."

The West Indies will face Pakistan in a three-match T20I series in Florida starting Thursday, providing an opportunity to build on the positives from the recent series and address the batting inconsistencies.
