Bangladesh’s newly appointed sports minister, Aminul Haque, has expressed his desire to quickly resolve tensions with India following Bangladesh’s absence from the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Speaking after being sworn in as part of Bangladesh’s new cabinet, Aminul revealed that he had already met with India’s deputy high commissioner to initiate discussions. “We want to resolve this issue quickly through discussions because we want to maintain friendly relations with all our neighbouring countries,” he said, signalling a diplomatic reset after weeks of uncertainty.
Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the tournament, which is being held in India and Sri Lanka, after the previous government declined to send the team to India due to geopolitical tensions. The situation escalated after the Indian government reportedly asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL squad. The fallout ultimately led to the ICC excluding Bangladesh from the marquee event.
However, in a significant development earlier this month, the ICC confirmed that Bangladesh would not face penalties for declining to play their matches in India. Additionally, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has been granted hosting rights for an out-of-turn ICC event before the 2031 men’s ODI World Cup, which Bangladesh will co-host with India.
Looking ahead, India are scheduled to tour Bangladesh in September for a white-ball series comprising three ODIs and three T20Is. While the tour was arranged prior to the controversy, it now takes on added diplomatic and sporting importance as both nations aim to rebuild trust and restore normal cricketing ties.
