Axar Patel Fined INR 12 Lakh for Slow Over Rate in DC's Loss to MI

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during their IPL 2025 clash against Mumbai Indians on Sunday night at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

According to Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, a captain is fined ₹12 lakh for the first slow over rate offence of the season. The updated IPL rules have removed match suspensions for such offences, opting instead for monetary penalties and in-game fielding restrictions.

DC appeared to be in control while chasing 206, riding on Karun Nair’s stunning 89. With 66 needed off the last eight overs and seven wickets in hand, they looked poised for victory. However, a series of poor shot selections and a dramatic hat-trick of run-outs in the penultimate over led to a 12-run defeat — their first loss in five matches.

“We had the game in hand,” Axar reflected after the match. “I think the middle order gave away soft dismissals — some poor shot choices. Losing by 12 runs with an over to spare, we could’ve still pulled it off. You can’t always rely on the lower order to rescue you. These things happen, and there’s no point overthinking it.”

Earlier in the season, Hardik Pandya (MI), Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson (RR), and Rajat Patidar (RCB) were also fined for similar over-rate violations.
