Atkinson strikes twice as Pakistan slip to 135 for 5 against England in Rawalpindi
England struck with the first ball of the match and shared the wickets around to leave Pakistan 135 for 5 in the second game of the tri-series at Rawalpindi
Gus Atkinson removed Fakhar Zaman with the opening delivery of the innings and returned to break the only substantial stand of the afternoon, as England pegged Pakistan back to 135 for 5 from 29.1 overs in the second match of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
England won the toss and chose to bowl, and three of Pakistan's top four were back in the pavilion inside 19 overs. Four bowlers had a wicket apiece by the midway point of the innings, with Atkinson taking two.
Pakistan, who opened the tournament with a 37-run win over Sri Lanka at the same ground on Sunday, were unable to build on any start. Their largest partnership of the innings was the 52 added for the fifth wicket.
Atkinson strikes with the first ball
Atkinson had Fakhar Zaman caught by Joe Root without a run on the board, the opener gone for 0 from a single delivery.
Sonny Baker then found the edge of Saim Ayub, who made 8 from 6 balls and was caught by Sam Curran, and Pakistan were 31 for 2 inside the sixth over.
Babar anchors before Jacks finds the stumps
Babar Azam set about rebuilding at a careful tempo, but on 34 from 52 balls he was bowled by Will Jacks, the off-spinner's first wicket of the innings, with the score 59 for 3 in the 15th over.
Jacks, used in tandem with the quicks rather than held back, had figures of 1-24 from seven overs.
Adil Rashid struck in his first spell when Salman Ali Agha, who made 107 in the tournament opener, was caught by Atkinson for 16 from 19 balls to leave Pakistan 81 for 4.
Saad Baig's grind ends in the 28th over
Wicketkeeper Saad Baig dug in for the longest innings of the Pakistan reply, facing 54 balls for his 35 before edging Atkinson to Curran in the 28th over.
That gave Atkinson figures of 2-23 and ended a fifth-wicket stand of 52, the one passage of play in which Pakistan had looked settled.
Hasan Nawaz counters after time away
Hasan Nawaz was the one Pakistan batter to score at better than a run a ball, reaching 31 from 33 deliveries with three fours and a six shortly after the fifth wicket fell.
The 23-year-old was released from the national squad last November and asked to play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan's premier first-class competition. The Pakistan Cricket Board said at the time that the decision was not related to injury or fitness.
Arafat Minhas joined him at the crease with the innings still to be rebuilt a second time.
England's first ODI series in Pakistan since 2005
The match is England's first one-day international of a tour that marks their first ODI series in Pakistan since 2005. The squad was welcomed by Pakistan Cricket Board officials on arrival in Islamabad on 16 October.
Harry Brook captains a 16-man England squad that is without Jos Buttler, who has had surgery on a hamstring injury, and Jacob Bethell, who is out with a knee problem. Jofra Archer has been rested.
Shaheen Shah Afridi leads Pakistan in the tri-series, which runs to 31 October across Rawalpindi and Lahore. All three teams play each other twice, with the top two meeting in the final at the Gaddafi Stadium.
England's next fixture is against Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi on 22 October.
Score at the time of writing: Pakistan 135 for 5 (29.1 overs) v England, Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium
