Amelia Kerr, Georgia Plimmer Power New Zealand to 80-Run Win Over South Africa

Half-centuries from Amelia Kerr and Georgia Plimmer powered New Zealand women's national cricket team to a commanding 80-run victory over South Africa women's national cricket team in the first T20I in Mount Maunganui on Sunday.

After being sent in to bat, New Zealand posted a formidable 190 for 7, built around a superb 146-run partnership between Kerr and Plimmer – the fourth-highest stand for the side in women’s T20Is.

The innings began with an early setback when Izzy Gaze was run out without facing a ball. However, Kerr and Plimmer quickly seized control of the innings. Kerr continued her rich run of form with a fluent 78, her fourth consecutive fifty-plus score, striking 11 fours and two sixes. A majority of her runs came in boundaries as she repeatedly pierced the field with crisp off-side strokes and inventive shots.

Plimmer initially took time to settle but accelerated after the halfway mark, finishing with 63 and keeping the scoreboard ticking through the middle overs.

South Africa’s bowlers struggled to find consistent lengths on a flat pitch. Masabata Klaas was the standout performer with the ball, returning figures of 2 for 15, while Nadine de Klerk also picked up two wickets. Despite a late fightback that saw the last six wickets fall for 44 runs, the visitors still faced a steep chase.

In response, South Africa never gained momentum. Jess Kerr struck twice early to remove Sune Luus and captain Laura Wolvaardt, restricting the visitors to just 19 runs in the powerplay.

Sophie Devine then dismantled the middle order with a superb spell of 4 for 12, the best T20I figures of her career. Tazmin Brits top-scored with 29 but struggled to accelerate as South Africa finished on 110 for 7.

The victory gives New Zealand a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. 🏏
