Adductor strain rules Ishan Kishan out of the second T20I and puts Sooryavanshi in line
India will be without Ishan Kishan for Saturday's second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch after the wicketkeeper-batter was ruled out with a low-grade right adductor strain
The BCCI confirmed the injury on Friday, a day before the sides return to Hagley Oval, and said Kishan picked up the strain during the series opener on Thursday. India lead the five-match series 1-0.
No return date has been put on the injury. The board said its medical staff are monitoring him, which leaves the team management a decision to make in the middle order, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi the most obvious candidate to come in.
The problem was visible on Thursday, when Kishan dropped down the order and lasted three balls in a chase India completed with two deliveries to spare.
What the board has said
"Ishan Kishan is ruled out of the second T20I against New Zealand due to a low grade right adductor strain, which he sustained during the first T20I of the series," the BCCI said in its update on Friday.
The board added that "the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress", without naming a target date for his return or saying whether he is expected to travel on with the squad.
Kishan is one of two wicketkeepers in the 16-man squad, alongside Sanju Samson, so the absence is felt more in the batting order than behind the stumps.
A short night in the opener
Kishan came in at No. 5 at Hagley Oval and made 1 from 3 balls, caught by Finn Allen off Mitchell Santner as India rebuilt a chase of 226.
The order had already been rearranged around him. Tilak Varma was promoted ahead of his usual slot, and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained it simply: "Ishan Kishan has a groin niggle, that's why Tilak Varma was promoted."
India got home anyway. New Zealand had posted 225 for 4, with Glenn Phillips unbeaten on 82, before Samson's 67 and Naman Dhir's late hitting carried India to a four-wicket win.
Sooryavanshi in line
Kotak was direct about the succession before the BCCI's statement landed. "Ishan is unlikely to play in the second T20I," he said. "If Ishan doesn't play, Vaibhav could definitely step in for him."
Sooryavanshi sat out the opener in Christchurch and was not used during India's T20Is against West Indies earlier in October, so a recall would be his first cricket of the tour.
The teenager has 246 runs in eight T20Is at an average of 30.75 since debuting against England in July, with a best of 81 against Zimbabwe in a series he finished as player of the series.
His most recent international innings were 38 against Sri Lanka and 15 against Pakistan at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, where India took the gold medal.
The captain's caution
Before the series, Shreyas Iyer had made clear that a place was not simply waiting for Sooryavanshi while India's opening pair was scoring.
"It's not like he can walk in right now, because our openers are scoring consistently, and they have won the World Cup," the India captain said.
Kishan's strain changes that arithmetic without changing Iyer's point. Indian reports suggest that if Sooryavanshi does play, he would open alongside Abhishek Sharma, with Samson moving to No. 3, rather than slot straight into Kishan's middle-order role.
What is left of the tour
The second T20I is at Hagley Oval on Saturday, with the series then moving to Wellington on 27 October, Auckland on 30 October and Hamilton on 1 November.
That schedule leaves India room to be cautious with Kishan, and gives New Zealand four matches in which to recover a series they have already fallen behind in.
The BCCI has not named a squad replacement, which points to the strain being treated as a short absence rather than a tour-ending one.
India and New Zealand meet again at Hagley Oval on Saturday, with India chasing a 2-0 lead and no word yet on when Kishan will be fit to play.
