His career has interrupted several periods of injury layoffs, but Chameera is still valued by Sri Lanka for how easily he slips into the role of lead seamer when he's fit. After a 20-month absence from the T20I side, he returned in September 2025 to play 22 matches - not consecutively, though - through to the end of Sri Lanka's campaign in the following year's World Cup, and took 38 wickets in them at a strike rate of 13.2. While he often bowls over 145kph and has a sharp bouncer, Chameera is an orthodox line-and-length bowler in a land populated by the hyperextending, slingy-arm type. As he gained experience, he became more versatile, bowling legcutters and floaters, and stepping in to restrict the scoring after the powerplay overs in T20s. He made his international debuts in 2015, bowling Ross Taylor with a 146kph delivery in his first over in ODIs, and going on to play the World Cup in the format two months later. But it took him till 2021, many injury breaks later, to get his first five-for in the format. His maiden Test five-for, though, came earlier, in his fourth Test, in Hamilton in 2015. Sri Lanka lost the series 2-0, but Chameera, with 12 wickets at an average of 24, was their top wicket-taker. He was also Sri Lanka's leading wicket-taker in T20Is in 2025, taking 22 at an economy of 7.3. He played in four T20 World Cups between 2016 and 2026, the most noteworthy performance being his 2 for 36 in a big win over Australia in the last of those tournaments.
